I guess that maybe because compared to everyone on the field at the time, I had been playing longer and knew we could touch her, it was my idea first. But I think anyone who knew that we could touch her would have offered to do it, just because it's the right thing to do. She was obviously in agony. -- Mallory Holtman

Mind Boggling
Sowell on Obama
No doubt it is only a matter of time before there is a black president, just as it was only a matter of time before Paul Waner got his 3,000th hit. The issue is whether we want to reach that landmark so badly that we are willing to overlook how questionably that landmark is reached. What's so questionable about Obama? Is he the candidate of change--which is something we all would like to see?
Although Senator Obama has presented himself as the candidate of new things — using the mantra of “change” endlessly — the cold fact is that virtually everything he says about domestic policy is straight out of the 1960s and virtually everything he says about foreign policy is straight out of the 1930s . . ..We paid a terrible price for such 1960s notions in the years that followed . . . [while the 1930's foreign policy] approach, in the name of peace, is what led to the most catastrophic war in human history.

Dr. Nancy Pelosi, Prof. of Old Testament Bull S--
The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.' On this Earth Day, and every day, let us pledge to our children, and our children's children, that they will have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature.
- Nancy Pelosi, Earth Day 2008 Press Release
Evidently it's not the first time she's done this.
The Tabletalk is now offering a reward to anyone who can find this "quoted" passage in the Old Testament. Or the entire Bible, for that matter. Don't bother - it's not in there.
This passage, on the other hand, is:
"A false witness will not go unpunished, and [she] who pours out lies will not go free." Proverbs 19:5Oh yeah, and it warns about this too:
[T]hey exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the [creation] rather than the Creator . . .Keep up the good work, Professor P. With this kind of track record, we certainly trust you with our Congress.

“Global warming” is not a global crisis
Manhattan Declaration on Climate Change
“Global warming” is not a global crisis
We, the scientists and researchers in climate and related fields, economists, policymakers, and business leaders, assembled at Times Square, New York City, participating in the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change,
Resolving that scientific questions should be evaluated solely by the scientific method;
Affirming that global climate has always changed and always will, independent of the actions of humans, and that carbon dioxide (CO2) is not a pollutant but rather a necessity for all life;
Recognising that the causes and extent of recently-observed climatic change are the subject of intense debates in the climate science community and that oft-repeated assertions of a supposed ‘consensus’ among climate experts are false;
Affirming that attempts by governments to legislate costly regulations on industry and individual citizens to encourage CO2 emission reduction will slow development while having no appreciable impact on the future trajectory of global climate change. Such policies will markedly diminish future prosperity and so reduce the ability of societies to adapt to inevitable climate change, thereby increasing, not decreasing human suffering;
Noting that warmer weather is generally less harmful to life on Earth than colder:
Hereby declare:
That current plans to restrict anthropogenic CO2 emissions are a dangerous misallocation of intellectual capital and resources that should be dedicated to solving humanity’s real and serious problems.
That there is no convincing evidence that CO2 emissions from modern industrial activity have in the past, are now, or will in the future cause catastrophic climate change.
That attempts by governments to inflict taxes and costly regulations on industry and individual citizens with the aim of reducing emissions of CO2 will pointlessly curtail the prosperity of the West and progress of developing nations without affecting climate.
That adaptation as needed is massively more cost-effective than any attempted mitigation, and that a focus on such mitigation will divert the attention and resources of governments away from addressing the real problems of their peoples.
That human-caused climate change is not a global crisis.
Now, therefore, we recommend –
That world leaders reject the views expressed by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as well as popular, but misguided works such as “An Inconvenient Truth”.
That all taxes, regulations, and other interventions intended to reduce emissions of CO2 be abandoned forthwith.
Agreed at New York, 4 March 2008.

A Glimpse Into Yesteryear
Ruth!
I feel it time we both came clean in one mighty exfoliation of the soul, unmask our heart’s visage, and let our true Passions for each other collide into a fiery Apocalypse of love!
TO wit:
It is imperative that you attend the magnificent ritual known as P.B.T: the Coupling, so that I may reify my perfervid Passion through the rhythmic gyrations and systolic palpitations known as: the Dance.
I must exonerate myself of any slight I may have caused by the seductively silky, yet entirely masculine, parameters of my caress. Let me lull all your cares and worries and extrapolate all your torrid ambitions!
No! No! We must set aside our differences and injurious behaviors (born no doubt of our mutual suppressed Passion which stings us so) and parley our sexual duel through the wondrous raptures and endless pleasures of the Dance!
Come! We must ply our savage game of tease and taunt no more. Let us be taken up together into the heady rushing wind of revelry, and in that place, disgorge our flaming hearts—consumed with the same-sick desire!
Come sweet Tricky, concupiscence is no crime with us!
Please arrive promptly at nine, tonight, on the Balcony of Dreams, in whatever attire you deem necessary. Eighties power ballads, boogie, ghetto love, and Passion to ensue.
Your Guillermo,**
P.S. Reow!

Equal Opportunity Blogger
Here's how Hillaryous defended her words at this week's Debate:
Well, Tom, I can tell you that I may be a lot of things, but I'm not dumb. And I wrote about going to Bosnia in my book in 2004. I laid it all out there. And you're right. On a couple of occasions in the last weeks I just said some things that weren't in keeping with what I knew to be the case and what I had written about in my book. And, you know, I'm embarrassed by it. I have apologized for it. I've said it was a mistake. And it is, I hope, something that you can look over, because clearly I am proud that I went to Bosnia. It was a war zone . . . So I know that it is something that some people have said, "Wait a minute. What happened here?" But I have talked about this and written about it. And then, unfortunately, on a few occasions I was not as accurate as I have been in the past.......So I will either try to get more sleep, Tom, or, you know, have somebody who, you know, is there as a reminder to me. You know, you can go back for the past 15 months. We both have said things that, you know, turned out not to be accurate. You know, that happens when you're talking as much as we have talked.
But you know, I'm very sorry that I said it. And I have said that, you know, it just didn't jibe with what I had written about and knew to be the truth.
Really? Is outright lying just an embarrassing thing for her, sort of like accidentally admitting that she still wets the bed? And is a complete fabrication such as this really just the result of sleep deprivation?
Let no one accuse us of being unfair and unbalanced. Even if she is.

Gold Digger Alert
If you remember this encounter from last year, and the story that came of it, then you've surely been wondering for the past 12 months - whatever happened to Sara Schenck?
She's available. We just saw her the other morning, whipping up some latte something at the Starbucks on Gervais St.
Don't all go at once.
Actually, do, because that'd be a lot more entertaining.

Rick Roll
Which is why we like it whenever they make a mistake. It's juvenile, to be sure, but we can't help but laugh when they screw up.
With that in mind, you can imagine our glee at discovering the Times' latest goof. Evidently, the Times' ever cautious, ever careful, ever checking all the facts before reporting writers got punked by a couple of undergrads, when the NY Times reported on a current internet phenomenon called rickrolling. Turns out, it was the Times who got rickrolled.
You can watch an explanation of the phenomenon here.

The End of an Era
He has dedicated his life to two things: bringing down corrupt people and developing a lengthy list of hilarious one-liners used to pepper his class lectures.
This semester, we made it a point to write down as many of these sayings as we could. So now, as we study for our final examination next week, we give you those sayings that made it into our notes:
"You lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas."
On why conspiracies are a unique threat to public safety:
“We’ve got people out there blowing themselves up left and right. Do you think the decision to blow yourself up is for or against your own self-interest, self-preservation? Huh? Ok, in a multiple choice question, check the “against” box.”
On the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals:
Ha. You'll get to Richmond and wish you were in Pakistan or somewhere like that.
On the Federal mail fraud statute:
“All we’ve got to prove now is whether there was a scheme to defraud. Think that’s hard? Guess what – You’ve got a lot of people with their pants down around their ankles, who you de-pants-ed, who are really hurting right now. It's not hard. Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye.”
There are certain people out there who would rather trace laundered money than eat. They are hardwired, by God, to straighten stuff like this out. Find them.
Nobody ever takes a bribe. They just borrow money, or take loans…that are never paid back.
You want it? You got it. Toyota.
Comma, however, comma . . .
Do you know what the definition of a strip mall is? Grocery store and one end, drug store at the other end, and 11 Chinese restaurants in between.
You know the saying about trying to teach a pig to dance? It doesn’t work, and it annoys the pig.
Just before abruptly ending class 25 minutes early:
Any questions on this, I’ll be happy to take any questions? [whining] “Weee wannnaaa go, John.” Ok. Go.
Commenting on a case where the Criminal drove a Volvo:
Just goes to show you, bad people can buy Volvo’s. It’s not just soccer moms.
“Martha Stewart thought she could charm the dog off of the meat wagon.”
Chiarella was going to be hung up on the cross to pay for the sins of Wall Street.
After calling on a third year student who knew the answer to his question:
God bless you. Somebody read the case here. What’s this case about? Food. Is food important to sustain life? Yes, John. What do you do with food? You eat it, John. You put it in your body and it sustains you, John.
Anyone ever been at a place when the FBI raided it? Guess what -- it's a big deal. In other words, get the H out of here. This is not kids stuff…this is not “ohh, the FBI was here today, it was fun, we had a cup of coffee and a donut and then they went home.” Uh-uh. This is for real.
Freud gets to heaven, St. Peter welcomes him. Says, “We’re so glad to see you here, you’ve come at just the right time. God is having delusions of grandeur.” Freud answered, “Why is that, what do you mean?”
St. Peter replied, “God thinks he’s a federal district court judge.”
If you’re an expert, don’t look like a whore. “Yeah, I’ll testify on whatever they want me to for some money.”
