Politicians aren't in the business of telling us what we need to hear, they're in the business of telling us what we want to hear. You're not going to get as many votes telling people you need to change your life, you need to fix your problems on your own, as you're going to get saying to people we're going to solve your problems for you.In our humble opinion, there are some serious problems with the current health care system--problems that need to be addressed. Perhaps the solutions to those problems require some intervention by the federal government, although we aren't convinced that is the de facto answer.
One reason is that the problem is not as big as some folks in Washington make it out to be. For instance, as this video suggests, the number of uninsured Americans (generally suggested to be around 47 million) is not entirely accurate. Many people qualify for preexisting government plans, but don't take advantage of it.
More disturbing are the number of folks who could afford simple health insurance but choose not to pay for it. That's their prerogative, and we would never support a government plan that would force those people to purchase health insurance against their will. Is it anymore fair for the government to force the rest of us to pay for a plan those folks have chosen not to purchase themselves?
